The team is trained in Advance Open Water Diving, Public Safety Diving, dry suit, full facemask, underwater navigation, and search and recovery. The Team is also training with Pittsburgh River Rescue.
The team consists of Members of the Wheeling Police Department, Wheeling Fire Department, Ohio County Sheriffs Office, and the Benwood Volunteer Fire Department. The team will be trained to respond to incidents in the Tri-State area and will be capable of the following functions:
Perform disaster related assistance when requested
Perform underwater search and recovery missions involving victims, evidence and other property
Investigate underwater crime scenes and all associated scenes in the immediate area to include scene evaluation, search, recovery of evidence, and proper documentation and court presentation of such scene analysis
Investigate drowning and diving accidents.
Investigate boating accidents.
Perform certain search and recovery missions for non-evidentiary property.
Cooperate in any mutual aid.
Perform other waterborne missions as approved by the Dive Team chain of command.
The team is governed by an executive committee consisting of the Chiefs of each agency involved and the Ohio County EMA Director. The dive team is under the command of Capt. Mike Baker of the Wheeling Fire Department.
