K9

The  Wheeling  Police  Department  K-9 Unit  was  established  to  augment  Police  services  to  the  community; Because  of  their  superior  sense  of  smell,  hearing  and  physical  capabilities.   The  trained  law  enforcement  K9 is  a  valuable  supplement  to  Police  manpower.

The  K-9  Unit  Team  comprised  of  one  handler  and  one  dog  undergoes  rigorous  training  before  being  used  as  a  team.   The  K-9  Team  is  a  dual  purpose  team,  meaning  they  specialize  both  in  patrol  work  and detection  work.   Patrol  work  includes  tracking  suspects,  building  searches,  and  suspect  apprehensions.  Detection  work  includes  searching  for  illegal  narcotics.
