The patrol division is the backbone of the Wheeling Police
Department. It is the most visible to the citizens of Wheeling who
we are sworn to Protect. The Patrol Division is unique in the State
of WV and the United States. Main line Patrol Officers always patrol
two officers per cruiser. This is mandated by City Ordinance.
Patrol Supervisors, Lieutenants, and Sergeants are one Officer
Units.
The Patrol division consists of four shifts, Alpha, Bravo, Charlie,
and Delta. There are also three K-9 Units. Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie
shifts work eight hour shifts on a four week rotating basis. Delta
Shift is a steady night turn shift. The Wheeling Police Deparment
also utilizes a boat to patrol the the Ohio River.
As of January of 2010 the Patrol Cars will be utilizing a black and
white color scheme. The Patrol force uses Ford Crown Victoria Police
Cruisers. The Police Cruisers are equipped with Mobile Data
Terminals, GPS, and Radar. Supervisors utilize fully marked Ford
Explorers and Dodge Durangos.
The City of Wheeling is divided into 6 geographical areas that are
patrolled 24 hours a day.
