The patrol division is the backbone of the Wheeling Police Department. It is the most visible to the citizens of Wheeling who we are sworn to Protect.  The Patrol Division is unique in the State of WV and the United States. Main line Patrol Officers always patrol two officers per cruiser. This is mandated by City Ordinance.  Patrol Supervisors, Lieutenants, and Sergeants are one Officer Units.

The Patrol division consists of four shifts, Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, and Delta. There are also three K-9 Units. Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie shifts work eight hour shifts on a four week rotating basis. Delta Shift is a steady night turn shift. The Wheeling Police Deparment also utilizes a boat to patrol the the Ohio River.

As of January of 2010 the Patrol Cars will be utilizing a black and white color scheme. The Patrol force uses Ford Crown Victoria Police Cruisers. The Police Cruisers are equipped with Mobile Data Terminals, GPS, and Radar. Supervisors utilize fully marked Ford Explorers and Dodge Durangos.
The City of Wheeling is divided into 6 geographical areas that are patrolled 24 hours a day.
