MARINE PATROL
The Wheeling PD Boat Patrol enables the Wheeling Police to patrol the 7+
miles of the Ohio River that lies in the city limits. This
Program is geared toward enforcing the Water Safety regulations of
the State Of WV and US Coast Guard.
Officers of the WPD receive training provided by the WV DNR. The course focuses on boater safety rules, enforcement priorities, tactical boating and boat operations.
The boat has been utilized in the apprehension of suspects who have attempted to evade capture by jumping in the river as well as victim recovery. The boat has been used for Safety patrol duties at festivals and during holidays where boat traffic is a concern. The boat was used as a security component when President George W. Bush gave a speech at the Capitol Music Hall.
The addition of the WPD Boat Patrol to the Wheeling Police Department has enabled the WPD to provide services in a previously unreachable area of our jurisdiction increasing public safety and safety awareness with a high visibility program.
