CHIEF OF POLICE

ROBERT G. MATHENY

Chief Robert G. Matheny has 24 years of law enforcement experience and served 20 years with the Clarksburg Police Department before his retirement in 2009.  At retirement, Chief Matheny held the rank of Lieutenant and served as the Department’s Administrative Lieutenant.  In 2002 he was appointed as the Designated Civil Rights Officer for the City of Clarksburgby West Virginia Governor Bob Wise.

Chief Matheny is a 1987 graduate of the WV State Police Academy as well as a 2008 graduate of the FBI National Academy. He has received hundreds of hours of in-service training in the law enforcement field, with an emphasis in the areas of hate crime, homicide, and investigative techniques. Chief Matheny is a certified Police Officer, Firefighter, Scuba Diver, and S.W.A.T. Officer. 

He is a certified instructor in the areas of law enforcement and fire service and is a member of the WV Hate Crime Task Force as well as several other civic organizations.  Chief Matheny holds an adult teaching permit through the State of West Virginia and lectures throughout the State. 

In 2009 Chief Matheny was honored to receive the appointment of Chief of Police for the City of Wheeling.
